Biotangents is an innovations-led veterinary diagnostics company based in Edinburgh. Using our proprietary isothermal amplification platform technology (Amplispec™), we develop accurate, rapid and cost-effective diagnostic assays to detect a variety of infectious diseases in livestock, including mastitis, BVD and brucellosis.
Amplispec™ utilises isothermal amplification of the untranslated region (UTR) of the RNA genome to boost sample sensitivity for the qualitative detection of specific pathogens.
Launch projects include lab-based and point of need tests to diagnose mastitis and BVD, two of the most globally prevalent and economically important cattle diseases.
Amplispec™ PON MASTITIS

Ideal for large farms, co-operatives or vet clinics, this compact diagnostic unit will detect the presence of five common causal pathogens of mastitis. Simple to use, the novel preparation process allows rapid ‘milk to result’ in under an hour. The PON MASTITIS gives clinicians the tools to make informed, responsible first-line treatment decisions every time.
This game-changing device will allow widespread testing for the causes of mastitis in dairy cows to become commonplace and deliver greater confidence in prudent prescribing and selective dry cow therapy.
Amplispec™ LAB BVD

Faster, simpler and less expensive to run than standard PCR, LAB BVD delivers highly accurate and reliable results with 99% sensitivity and 100% specificity.
Accredited, professional assays for commercial lab settings using isothermal amplification technology for the detection of BVDV 5' UTR and compatible with existing qPCR or lower-cost IA readers. LAB BVD uses novel lyophilised bead technology for improved technician preparation and stable handling of individual or pooled samples. Reagent rehydration, sample addition and fluorescence signal amplification are performed in the same tube; no transfer to a 96-well microtitre plate or to other PCR tubes is necessary. Both testing and controls kits are available.
Rapid run-time and simple protocols mean that cost-effective, qualitative detection of BVD RNA is available within less than 1 hour.
Amplispec™ LAB MASTITIS

Quick, accurate detection of Streptococcus uberis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus dysgalactiae and Streptococcus agalactiae in a single procedure.
Professional diagnostic assay using the same bead extraction process as LAB BVD, and compatible with existing commercial laboratory equipment. It is designed to be used with RNA isolated from bovine serum samples using current extraction methods.
Amplispec™ LAB MASTITIS compares favourably with other diagnostic methods: less expensive than traditional PCR and much faster than culture and sensitivity testing. Results interpretation is easy and definitive.
