On the 5th of December 2019, Biotangents’ Dr Archana Nayak gave an inspirational and informative presentation to students of Liberton High School and Leith Academy about scientific careers. The event was coordinated by Widening Participation and the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Edinburgh and highlighted opportunities in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) to pupils once they have left school.
Biotangents believe in advocating for STEM subjects in the local community as part of promoting the industries of the future and brightening the prospects of young people.
Archana’s presentation gave an overview of her background in biology and bioinformatics, outlining her journey from high-school in India, through higher education to her current employment as a bioinformatician at Biotangents. Her talk also covered her daily working life and the further opportunities available to young people, followed by a questions and answers session.
Archana’s efforts were highly appreciated by both the students and the co-ordinators who stated that 95% of the 44 attendees said that they had positively increased their awareness of how studying STEM subjects could contribute to their future career choices. This illustrates a strong endorsement for the programme and for Archana’s ability to inspire and educate young people.
Biotangents warmly acknowledges and congratulates Archana’s efforts and will continue to support similar community STEM events.
